Volunteers of America

Mission:
To change lives by promoting self-determination, building strong communities and standing for social justice.

From at-risk youth to victims of domestic violence, recovering addicts and the frail elderly, Volunteers of America Oregon provides a range of supportive and empowering services to our area’s most vulnerable populations – and works with them to rebuild their lives and reach their full potential.

Today, through the dedication of 300 staff members and more than 900 volunteers, we help thousands of families in the greater Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington areas. We serve men, women, and children with a continuum of services, touching individuals from all walks of life, from the youngest to the oldest.

We are passionate about finding innovative solutions to our community’s most intractable social problems. Our comprehensive programs focus on three main areas: children and family, public safety/substance abuse treatment, and senior services.

Services Provided:
Therapeutic Nursery: We provide children with a high-quality therapeutic infant, toddler, or preschool classroom experience that helps them reach vital developmental and educational benchmarks. A high staff-to-child ratio ensures personal attention and builds self-esteem. We provide developmental assessments for all children, and referrals to additional resources are made as needed.

Respite Care: Our therapeutic classrooms give parents respite time to maintain employment, complete schooling, and resolve critical issues related to medical care, substance abuse treatment, and child welfare involvement. We also provide respite care one day each week for families enrolled in services on a first-come, first-served basis.

Parenting Education: We work with parents to cultivate parenting skills and build a strong family unit. As of July 1, 2009, we implemented Making Parenting a Pleasure, an interactive community- and strength-based program for our parent education already in use by other relief nurseries around the state.

Home-Based Services: Through regular home visits to families, we provide advocacy services and support. Upon entry in the program, we assess families’ risk factors and support systems, and in monthly home visits, we develop individualized plans that help parents to set and achieve goals. We provide access to resources that empower parents to remove the barriers inhibiting the development of better parenting skills and refer them to community resources. Furthermore, home safety assessments are conducted at six-month intervals to ensure families maintain safe environments for their children.

Transportation Services: We provide free transportation services to families living west of East 82nd Avenue, prioritizing families with the greatest need.
